2 Days in Pattaya: The Weekend Plan

Day one — the city from above, then a market

Go up Pratumnak Hill first thing. Wat Phra Yai's big Buddha sits at the top and the Phra Tamnak viewpoint just below gives you the whole bay at once, which orients you faster than anything else you could do with the morning. Both are ten minutes by songthaew from the centre and best before the heat.

Lunch on the hill — The Chocolate Factory or Sky Gallery, both looking out over the water. Spend the afternoon either on Pratumnak Beach below or in town at Terminal 21 if the sun has won.

In the evening, Thepprasit Night Market, which runs nightly, or the beach road and the restaurants behind it. Walking Street is fifteen minutes away if you want to see it, and this is the night to do it — tomorrow does not need an early start.

Day two — a beach worth the trip

Pick a direction. South, the Na Jomtien strip has the beach clubs and the better sand — twenty minutes or so by songthaew or taxi, and the clifftop restaurants are up there for later. North, Wong Amat is ten minutes and calmer, with cleaner water than the city beach and a more upmarket feel.

Either way, stay put. The value of day two is not moving: a beach, lunch where you are, and the afternoon in the water rather than in traffic.

For dinner, if you went south, the clifftop places at Na Chom Thian are the obvious finish — book a lower terrace and get there before the light goes.

If you would rather swap day two

Two alternatives work without breaking the plan. The Sanctuary of Truth at Naklua is a half day and is the thing visitors who dislike Pattaya still rate — go in the morning, it is exposed and gets hot. Or the Elephant Sanctuary near Bang Sare, which does feeding and bathing in small groups with no rides.

Both leave the afternoon free for a beach near where you are staying, which is a reasonable compromise if you cannot face a whole day doing nothing.

What two days cannot fit

Koh Larn, honestly. The public boat is about forty-five minutes each way from Bali Hai, queues build at weekends and in high season, and doing it properly means giving it the whole day — which on a two-day trip means seeing no city at all.

Also out: the water parks, each a full day; the Sattahip navy beaches, which have their own checkpoint procedures and want an early start; and anything inland beyond one half-day stop. If those are what you came for, you are looking at a three-day trip, and it is worth the extra night.
