One Day in Pattaya: What to Do With 24 Hours
What can you do in Pattaya in one day?
In one day, pick a direction and stay there. The city version is Pratumnak's viewpoint and big Buddha, lunch above the bay and a market in the evening. The beach version skips the city entirely for Na Jomtien or Wong Amat. Koh Larn and the water parks do not fit.
One day in Pattaya is a real constraint, not a shortened holiday. The city is spread over fifteen kilometres of coast, the good beaches and the good temples are in opposite directions, and the traffic on Second Road in the late afternoon undoes any plan built on getting across town twice.
So the working rule is one direction, one theme, and no attempt to tick everything. Here are the three versions of a Pattaya day that work, depending on why you are here.
If you are coming from Bangkok for the day
You will lose about four hours to the road, so plan a compact day near the middle. Start at Wat Phra Yai on Pratumnak Hill and the Phra Tamnak viewpoint below it — ten minutes from the centre and the single best half hour in the city for understanding where you are.
Lunch on the hill at The Chocolate Factory or Sky Gallery, both looking out over the bay. Then either an hour at Terminal 21 if the heat is winning, or down to Pratumnak Beach, before heading back. If you can stay until dark, the beach road at sunset is the version of Pattaya that photographs well.
What I would not do on a Bangkok day return is Walking Street. It is the part of the city that needs the least time and the one people build the whole trip around.

If it is your arrival day
Do less than you think. Arrival days in this heat go badly when they are planned as sightseeing, and the city rewards an early evening far more than a hot afternoon.
A swim near where you are staying, an early dinner, and one of the markets — Thepprasit, Rompho or the beach market, all of which run nightly — is a better first day than a forced march round three attractions. Save the hill for the morning, when it is cool and empty.

If you only want a beach
Then skip the city entirely. Pattaya Beach in front of town is a working city beach; the sand worth a single precious day is twenty minutes south at Na Jomtien, where the beach clubs are, or ten minutes north at Wong Amat, which is calmer and cleaner than anything in the middle.

What does not fit in a day
Koh Larn. The public boat from Bali Hai takes about forty-five minutes each way, with queues at weekends and in high season — a rushed island day is worse than no island day, and the last boats back fill up.
Also out: the water parks, which are each a full day; Khao Kheow Open Zoo, which is an hour north before you start walking; and the Sattahip navy beaches, which have their own entry procedures and want an early start. Those are the arguments for staying a second and third night.

- It is enough to understand the place and see one part of it properly. It is not enough for an island, a water park or a temple day as well. If Pattaya is the point of the trip rather than a stop, three days is the number that makes it worthwhile.
